Piepenbrock energy management for environmentally friendly processes and enhanced competitiveness

The most environmentally friendly and inexpensive kilowatt hour is the one you don't use in the first place. As a facility service provider Piepenbrock advises customers nationwide on how to handle resources efficiently. The basis for this is energy management. A main aspect of facility management is the key remit to optimise the costs of providing energy in buildings and facilities without compromising user friendliness, including hygiene requirements, system availability and service life. Good energy management is not only designed to comply with statutory requirements, but at the same time to achieve maximum performance while minimising the use of resources. It identifies saving potentials, it attracts tax incentives, reduces overheads and thus increases competitiveness. In addition, test certificates like ISO 50001 demonstrate energy awareness and decisively enhance the company's positive image.

You have questions about energy and heat insulation. Piepenbrock takes a lean approach to customers' primary energy consumption in its energy consulting. Energy management specialists help you to minimise your carbon footprint in the long run and ensure a better energy and environmental balance sheet. So if you are intending to put your energy management on a sustainable footing we will be happy to help and advise you. Get in touch with us now.

Why companies need to start saving energy

All companies deemed not to be SMEs have had their hand forced since 5 December 2015: the amendment of the Federal Act on Energy Services (EDL-G) obliges them to monitor their energy consumption and identify potentials for saving. An energy audit to DIN EN 16247-1 may either be performed for this purpose or a certified energy management system to ISO 50001 or environmental management system to the Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) can be put in place. In either case, Piepenbrock is a competent partner to advise on energy issues.

Our energy management services for you

Piepenbrock offers customers consulting and implementation across the entire service spectrum. Our experienced and qualified energy consultants are on hand to help you and possess the following qualifications:

  • Lead auditor to ISO 50001
  • Internal auditor to ISO 50001
  • Energy auditor EN 16247/ISO 50002

Take advantage of our high level of in-house services: at your request we perform all steps from analysis and planning to project management under one roof. Our energy management portfolio includes the following services:

Planning, concept and project management

We review energy management in your company and optimise your processes. The effectiveness of energy management in terms of expenditure and the use of resources hinges on how well it is established and continuously cultivated in the company. We take on planning, concept and project management – depending on your needs. Take advantage of our professional services:

  • Unlocking savings potential: our experts precisely analyse and identify optimisation possibilities, making targeted use of infrared cameras and thermographic images, for instance. On this basis, we then draft a package of energy- saving measures.
  • Energy optimisation of technical facilities and building management systems: the main aim is to optimise building management systems and technical facilities through non-investive measures. In the first step we check the cost-benefit ratio based on anticipated payoff times before we deploy investive measures in the second step, which are designed to improve your energy efficiency – subject to your agreement and confirmation.
  • Project management: if you need a competent and experienced partner to control and deploy the recommended package of measures, your energy management system is also in the best of hands at Piepenbrock for handling the project, calling for tenders, placing orders, acceptance and monitoring performance.

Energy audit and certification

You are not a SME? If this is the case, you must either perform an energy audit every four years to EN 16247-1, certification to the more in-depth ISO 50001 standard or introduce an environmental management system to EMAS. Piepenbrock provides expert support in all of these processes. As an energy consulting specialist we support you with the preparation, planning and performance of energy audits and certification. Take advantage of the experience of our experts to do the job. What we offer:

  • Support of existing energy management systems: if you have already implemented an energy management system, we will maintain and develop it professionally to keep pace with future recertification requirements.
  • Energy audit: all companies not deemed as small- or medium-sized enterprises according to the EU definition, were obliged to perform their first energy audit by 5 December 2015 at the latest, and every four years thereafter. We support you with our experts who are registered in the energy audit list held by the Federal Office of Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA).
  • Internal audit to ISO 50001: the internal audit is designed to identify weaknesses and initiate corrective and preventive measures. As no two management systems are identical in structure, on the one hand the company's specific energy targets and work flows need to be taken into account, and on the other, all standard requirements for successful external certification to ISO 50001 need to be satisfied. We help you do so in a professional targeted approach.

Support with ISO 50001 certification: once all the relevant information has been collected for the internal audit and the foundation stone has thus been laid, an accredited certification body takes the stage. An external auditor puts the fledgling or optimised energy management system through its paces. Piepenbrock provides a point of contact with the necessary background knowledge of your energy management system for the external auditor to ensure structured assistance during the certification process. This speeds things up and generates savings in the process.

  • Sustainability certification to GEFMA 160: around 80 per cent of a facility's life cycle costs arise during operation. Facility management focusing on sustainability criteria helps to reduce these costs and protect the environment. We take the GEFMA 160 directive "Sustainability in Facility Management" as our reference for supporting you with their certification process.
  • Identifying funding possibilities: the BAFA promotes energy management systems, alternative systems and a series of further measures in companies which permit systematic energy consumption recording and evaluation. The aim is to create the prerequisites for deploying effective energy efficiency measures. Piepenbrock provides expert advice on the funding possibilities open to your company.

Energy controlling and monitoring

The basic prerequisite for implementing energy efficiency measures is thorough knowledge of the company's energy consumption. Successful energy controlling and monitoring therefore includes methodical recording, documentation and analysis to thus assess a company's energy status quo. Our experts offer the services below to assist you:

  • Data capture: in the first step, large consumers in the company are identified, and their consumption and costs recorded in preparation for energy controlling. Consumption data is captured meticulously, no matter whether it performed manually or automatically.
  • Key energy figures: if we want to map energy efficiency in your company in real terms, recording absolute energy consumption does not go far enough. It is affected by production-related factors like production quantity and the number of employees. We also take these factors into account to arrive at key figures which let us make comparisons and identify trends.
  • Energy analysis: during the energy analysis we examine the recorded data to gain a picture of the energy supply and consumption in your company. In this way we can assess the energy status quo and initiate suitable measures for increasing energy efficiency.
  • Evaluation: the data and energy figures captured during the analysis phase are then amalgamated and evaluated. The main consumers and potential energy losses are identified. Visualisation plays a crucial role in detecting savings potential and toeholds for initiating suitable measures.
  • Monthly and annual reports: we keep you up-to-date: we document current progress by drafting regular reports containing all the necessary information like consumption trends and proposed and implemented optimisation measures.

How Piepenbrock goes about the job

1st step: inventorising, rough analysis and target setting

At the start of the project, energy targets are fixed with the top management. We then take stock of the relevant property to gain a picture of the status quo on energy-relevant systems. Based on these findings, we conduct a rough analysis to determine the main energy flows, their impact on overall consumption and identify initial savings potential. The tasks in detail:

  • Record and document data
  • Identify improvement potential
  • Identify people with a direct influence on energy consumption
  • Take statutory parameters into account
  • Determine energy targets
  • Define action plan and deadlines

2nd stage: detailed analysis
If inventorising and the rough analysis have produced worthwhile energy-saving measures, the detailed analysis examines potential weaknesses such as specific areas or systems which consume a lot of energy. Out of this we distill measures to be followed up for further planning.

3rd stage: planning measures
As soon as the necessary measures are identified and developed, they are assessed and prioritised for incorporation into an effective measures package. An important aspect is the assessment of economic efficiency.

4th stage: control and correction
Once planned measures are implemented, they need to be continuously compared to the defined goals in order to initiate adjustments as required.
